2013 Spring/Summer: Black & White Color Combination

Wednesday, April 10th, 2013

Black and white.  This high contrast color combination is very popular this season.  It is in color blocking, pattern, on shirts, skirts, dresses, even pants (proceed with caution)!  When wearing these two colors together, you can add a pop of another color or just leave the two colors to stand alone.  There isn’t too much to this trend, pretty straight forward…black…and white!

THE TAKE-AWAY:  This “trend” is easy.  Odds are, most of you have some combination of black and white already in your wardrobe.  So, be intentional and give this one a try!

Something Shiny

Thursday, October 4th, 2012

Having something shiny on stand-by can make for a  “pick-me-up” to any outfit.  Get creative…shoes or tops.  Or go the classic route…earrings, necklace, or bracelets.  If you decide to go the classic route, make sure the item of jewelry is substantial enough to be noticed as one of the featured details of the outfit.  Metallics are a neutral (read here about the other basic neutrals).  And since they are neutrals, they will go with anything!  Get adventurous and wear something shiny!

THE TAKE-AWAY:  Your shiny jewelry could be added to a simply top and pair of jeans.  It is also fun to have a pop of shine peeking out from under your jeans with a pair of metallic shoes.

The Neutrals

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

Black, brown, navy blue, white, gray, and metallics (any metallic color)…these are your six neutral colors!  You can put any color with a neutral and have a good color combo.  These neutral colors will literally go with ANYTHING!  Try some new color combinations.  Granted, some colors look more pleasing with certain neutrals, but don’t get stuck in a visual rut!  Don’t always do red with black…try it with brown or gray.  Teal is great with brown, but how about with navy blue?

THE TAKE-AWAY: There are certain color combos that make your “go to” list, but if you’re feeling bored with the way you’re dressing, switching up your most worn neutral can feel exciting and liberating!

The Color Black

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Putting color in your wardrobe can be a tricky thing.  Most people find safety in a couple colors and never want to stray from them.  For women, this is most commonly BLACK!  Culturally, black is a color of sophistication and seems to be the color that is “most dressy.”  And then there is the other justification we cling to…black is slimming!  I know that a woman will never entirely be able to get away from black in a wardrobe, but the attempt to branch out SHOULD be made.  And here are just a couple of reasons:

  1. Black is the harshest neutral color, so people with more subtle coloring (like blondes) should gravitate more towards wearing browns closer to the face!
  2. This is a mantra women should live by…black doesn’t make you look skinny, nicely fitted clothes do!  The truth is, you can wear black and still look frumpy!  So, why not choose colors that are going to compliment your natural coloring?

THE TAKE-AWAY: When bombarded with color choices (you know the cardigan sales with 50 different color choices), a good rule of thumb is…the colors you will ALWAYS look great in are the ones that naturally occur in your personal coloring (your eye color and hair color)!
