Something Shiny

October 4th, 2012

Having something shiny on stand-by can make for a  “pick-me-up” to any outfit.  Get creative…shoes or tops.  Or go the classic route…earrings, necklace, or bracelets.  If you decide to go the classic route, make sure the item of jewelry is substantial enough to be noticed as one of the featured details of the outfit.  Metallics are a neutral (read here about the other basic neutrals).  And since they are neutrals, they will go with anything!  Get adventurous and wear something shiny!

THE TAKE-AWAY:  Your shiny jewelry could be added to a simply top and pair of jeans.  It is also fun to have a pop of shine peeking out from under your jeans with a pair of metallic shoes.

Leggings & Tights

September 26th, 2012

There is an important factor when it comes to successfully wearing leggings or tights…the dress or top you wear MUST completely cover your butt!  It doesn’t matter how toned or…not toned your body is, this rule applies to EVERYONE!  I guarantee you are not the exception to the rule.  When a bum is visible with such fitted fabric against it, the outfit is awkward for onlookers.  Also, when fabric fits that close and tight, it often becomes “see through”…exposing the nature of your undies or lack there of.

THE TAKE-AWAY:  Always do a full-length check in a mirror before leaving the house when wearing leggings or tights.

Buying The Trends

August 30th, 2012

Buying trendy items can often feel confusing.  Most peoples’ tendency is to wait for the items to go on sale at the end of the season.  The risk with buying a trendy item at the end of a season is it might not be in style the following season.  The better way to purchase a trend is at the BEGINNING of the season.  You will pay full price for the item, but you can wear it during the time of year it looks best and you will have more opportunity to wear it.  And the more you wear it; the more you will get your money’s worth!  Limit your number of trendy item purchases as well!  If you have too many trends to wear during a season, it will be difficult to wear them enough to get your money’s worth.  Just choose a couple.

THE TAKE-AWAY: Not all trends are worth wearing!  Make sure the ones that pique your curiosity are good for you before they turn into purchases!

Texture

July 1st, 2012

Print, Color, Pattern, and Texture are four elements that contribute to a standout ensemble!  Be sure to read up on the previous blogs about Print, Color, and Pattern.

The goal is to think outside “the box” . . . but first, let me define “the box”.  “The box” is typically some sort of denim texture on the bottom and a variation of smooth cotton on the top (jeans and a t-shirt).  Although both denim and cotton are textures, the goal here is to implement new and unexpected textures.  Try flipping the classic combo upside-down!  Cotton on the bottom and denim on the top . . . this would be an unexpected variation of textures.

Adding texture to your wardrobe will require some thoughtful effort, but it is necessary for adding depth to outfits.  You can also add unexpected textures to outfits with tweed pants, lace camisoles, silk tops, a chiffon blouse, a gauzy scarf, or even snakeskin boots.

THE TAKE-AWAY:  The options are endless.  Odds are you have a wardrobe full of classic textures, so be mindful of unique textures you can add to your closet next time you are shopping.  Shop with a plan!

Pattern

May 28th, 2012

If you want an easy way to remember how to build a great outfit, remember: Print, Color, Pattern, and Texture!  Check out the previous blogs on Print and Color! Pattern would be defined as repeating colors and shapes.  The size of pattern you wear should most often pair with the size of frame you have.  If you are a fuller person, you will be able to balance a sizable pattern better than a smaller person.  Pattern can be the focal point of an outfit or it can simply peek as an accent from under a jacket or cardigan.

THE TAKE-AWAY:  Having patterned items in your wardrobe will add dimension to your look and will help you include creativity in your outfits.  Who doesn’t want getting dressed to be that easy?
